“Furthermore, Mañjusri Bodhisattva, suppose there are those who, without momentary wavering, constantly and sincerely think of and seek the wondrous Dharma. Good men and women, all of you should hearken.

By virtue of the power of observing the precepts, one attains Buddhahood.
If one enters the fine chamber of great compassion
And one's ear hears briefly this Dharani,
Even though observing the precepts is not yet perfected,
One will soon become the teacher to gods and humans."

THE SOUND THAT AWAKENS TEACHERS OF GODS AND MEN

Virtuous man, what is the sign of life? It is the mind of sentient beings that illuminates purity, in which they are aware of what they have realized. Karmic [consciousness] and wisdom cannot perceive themselves. This is comparable to the root of life.

Virtuous man, when the mind is able to illuminate and perceive enlightenment, it is but a defilement, because both perceiver and perceived are not apart from defilement.

After ice melts in hot water, there is no ice to be aware of its melting. The perception of the existence of the self enlightening itself is also like this.

"Virtuous man, if sentient beings in the Dharma Ending Age do not understand these four characteristics [of the self], even after cultivating the Path diligently for many kalpas, [it is still] called practicing with attachments and they will not be able to accomplish the fruition of sainthood.

Therefore, this is called [cultivating] the True Dharma in the Dharma Ending Age. Why? Because they mistake the various aspects of the self for nirvana, and regard their experiences and awakenings as accomplishments.

This is comparable to a man who mistakes a thief for his own son. His wealth and treasure will never increase. Why? Because if one grasps onto the self, one will also grasp onto nirvana. For him, the root of grasping onto the self is [merely] suppressed and [seemingly] there is the appearance of nirvana.

If there is one who hates the self, one will also have hatred for birth and death. Not knowing that grasping is the real [source of] birth and death, hatred for birth and death is [also] not liberation.

-- The Sutra of Complete Enlightenment

"Friend Sariputta, there are some brahmans & contemplatives, teachers of kamma, who declare that pleasure & pain are self-made. There are other brahmans & contemplatives, teachers of kamma, who declare that pleasure & pain are other-made. Then there are other brahmans & contemplatives, teachers of kamma, who declare that pleasure & pain are self-made & other-made. And then there are still other brahmans & contemplatives, teachers of kamma, who declare that pleasure & pain are neither self-made nor other-made, but arise spontaneously.

In this case, friend Sariputta, what is the Blessed One's doctrine? What does he teach? Answering in what way will I speak in line with what the Blessed One has said, not misrepresent the Blessed One with what is unfactual, and answer in line with the Dhamma so that no one whose thinking is in line with the Dhamma will have grounds for criticism?"

"The Blessed One, my friend, has said that pleasure & pain are dependently co-arisen. Dependent on what? Dependent on contact. One speaking in this way would be speaking in line with what the Blessed One has said, would not be misrepresenting the Blessed One with what is unfactual, and would be answering in line with the Dhamma so that no one whose thinking is in line with the Dhamma would have grounds for criticism."

"Friend Sariputta, there are some brahmans & contemplatives, teachers of kamma, who declare that pleasure & pain are self-made. The Buddha further added, "If one can chant this Dharani 21 times daily, one is worthy of accepting all the immense worldly offerings and will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss after one's death.

If one chants this Dharani constantly, one will attain Maha Parinirvana and be able to lengthen one's lifespan besides enjoying the most extraordinary bliss. After one's life is over, one will reborn in any of the wonderful Buddha lands, in constant company of the Buddhas. All Tathagatas will always give discourses on the profound and wonderful truth of Dharma and all World

Honored Ones will bestow predictions of enlightenment upon one. The light illuminating from one's body will pervade all Buddha lands."

On top of the Mandala one should spread different kinds of grass, flowers and burn different kinds of quality incense.

Then kneeling down with the right knee on the floor, mindfully reciting the Buddha's name and with the hands in the Mudrani symbol, (i.e. each hand bending the forefinger before and pressing it down with the thumb and placing both palms together before the chest) in reverence, one should recite this Dharani 108 times. The showers of flowers would rain down from the clouds and would thus be universally made as offerings to Buddhas as numerous as the grains of sand of eighty-eight million Ganges Rivers.

These Buddhas will simultaneously praise,
"Excellent! Rare indeed! A Buddha's true disciple!"

One will instantly attain Unobstructed Wisdom Samadhi and the Great Bodhi Mind Adorned Samadhi. Thus is the way to uphold this Dharani."

Lord of Heaven, please go back and transmit this Dharani to Devaputra Susthita. After seven days, come to see me with Devaputra Susthita."

Thus, at the abode of the World Honored One, the Lord of Heaven respectfully received this Dharani practice and returned to his heavenly palace to convey it to Devaputra Susthita."

Having received this Dharani, Devaputra Susthita kept to the practice as instructed for six days and six nights, after which all his wishes were completely fulfilled. The karma which should have led him to suffer in all the evil paths were all eradicated. He would remain on the Bodhi Path and increase his lifespan for an immeasurable period of time.

Thus, he was extremely delighted, exclaiming aloud in praise, "Extraordinary Tathagata! What a rare and wonderful Dharma! Its efficacy explicitly verified! Rare indeed! Truly I have thus obtained deliverance!"

At that time, there were present such women as Kuddara and such bhiksunis [nuns] as Subhadra, Upananda, Sagaramati, and 6 million bhiksunis. They were all great arhats. All "’asravas"’ [inner defilements] having been done away with, they were unmolested in mind and could act as they willed. They were parted from all illusion and all their sense-organs were subdued. Like great nagas, they were perfect in virtue. They were accomplished in the Wisdom of the All-Void. Also, early in the morning, after the sun had just risen, their hair stood on end all over their body and their blood so ran through their vessels that they looked like palasa flowers. Tears filled their eyes, which bespoke great sorrow. They desired to benefit beings, to give peace and bliss, and establish the Transcendent Truth of the All-Void of Mahayana. They meant to manifest what the Tathagata had by expediency latently taught, so that all his sermons would not disappear. In order to subjugate the minds of all beings, they sped to where the Buddha was, touched his feet, walked around him a 100 thousand times, folded their hands, paid homage, stepped back and sat on one side.

In the words of Terton Migyur Dorje:

“Those who see this script will not experience the three lower realms and will be liberated from the fear of falling into the lower realms; they will be purified of the five poisons, freed from the results of karma, and released from the fear of remaining in samsara.”

This script carries the essence of ultimate compassion. It bypasses the limitations of intellect and concepts, working directly on the mindstream of those who encounter it. Simply gazing upon the script plants the seeds of liberation, purifying karmic obscurations and guiding beings toward awakening.

In the words of Terton Migyur Dorje:

“Those who see this script will not experience the three lower realms and will be liberated from the fear of falling into the lower realms; they will be purified of the five poisons, freed from the results of karma, and released from the fear of remaining in samsara.”

Thirty-six thousand god-sons and twenty thousand god-daughters will activate their anuttara-samyak- sambodhi mind. Among the eight classes of Dharma protectors such as gods and dragons, some will become Srotapannas, entering the holy stream, and others will plant the conditions for going the Pretyekabuddha Way. Those who will activate the mind toward the unsurpassed Way will be so numerous that it will be beyond reckoning.

The Buddha continued..."Furthermore, if there are those who themselves copy or have others copy this Dharani Sutra, such individuals will never fall to hell, the ghost world, the animal kingdom, or the dominion of Yama, lord of the underworld. They will never again undergo the evil retributions of those evil life-paths. Individuals such as these, because of their merit gained from copying this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, will have past-life knowledge, continuing rebirth after rebirth, life after life, wherever they will be reborn.

If there are those who themselves copy or have others copy this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, the merit earned by such individuals will be no different from that of copying 84,000 Dharmas in store.

If there are those who themselves copy or have others copy this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, the merit earned by such individuals will be no different from that of constructing 84,000 treasure pagodas. If there are those who themselves copy or have others copy this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, because of this merit, their karma, if any, of falling to the five hells of uninterrupted suffering, will all be obliterated. Individuals such as these, because of their merit gained from copying this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, will have past-life knowledge, continuing rebirth after rebirth, life after life, wherever they will be reborn.

If there are those who themselves copy or have others copy this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, the merit earned by such individuals will be no different from that of copying 84,000 Dharmas in store.

If there are those who themselves copy or have others copy this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, the merit earned by such individuals will be no different from that of constructing 84,000 treasure pagodas. If there are those who themselves copy or have others copy this Sutra of the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathagata Dharani, because of this merit, their karma, if any, of falling to the five hells of uninterrupted suffering, will all be obliterated. The Buddha said: "O good man! For example, "matter" ["rupa"] has such representational qualities as blue, yellow, red, and white, and long or short, but a blind person cannot see it as such. Though it is not seen, we cannot say that there is no such quality as blue, yellow, red, white, long or short. Why not?

Even though the blind person cannot see [it], one who has eyes can see [it]. It is the same with the Buddha Nature. Even though all beings cannot see [it], the Bodhisattva at the level of the ten stages can see [it] somewhat; the Tathagata sees [it] completely. The Buddha-Nature seen by the Bodhisattva of the ten stages is like color seen at night. What the Tathagata sees is like color seen in the daytime." -- The Mahaparinirvana

First, the golden wheel, complete with the hub, the rim, and 1,000 spokes; second, the white elephant, white as a snow mountain, a magnificent spectacle as it stands on its seven limbs, like a mountain-king; third, the blue horse, with red mane and tail, hoofs made of the seven treasures, and flowers appearing underneath; fourth, the divine jewel, clearly visible, more than two elbows across, the radiance of which rains down treasures to fulfill the wishes of sentient beings; fifth, exquisite maidens, beautiful, wonderful, and limber as if boneless; sixth, the treasure minister, whose mouth spits out jewels, whose feet rain down jewels, and whose hands produce jewels; seventh, the military minister, who, by moving his body, can produce the four types of armed forces from the sky just like clouds."

Kyabje Chadrel Sangye Dorje also has stated, “Because the signs are increasing day by day of the coming of a danger which has never previously occurred, but could come quickly, of the use of nuclear weapons which have the power to instantly destroy all of the teachings of the victorious ones, the life force of beings, and all the goodness of the environment and of living beings in this world—the kind of violent warfare which could kill all of humanity."

Their merit will surpass the roots of goodness they have been planting for a long time in the presence of 99 billion koṭi Tathāgatas.

All Tathāgatas will support, protect, and remember them in the same way as they cherish their own eyes or as loving mothers care for their young children. If a person recites this one-fascicle sūtra, he in effect recites all the sūtras pronounced by Buddhas of the past, present, and future. For this reason, 99 billion koṭi Tathāgatas, who are Arhats, Samyak-Sambuddhas, will come, jam-packed sideways without any gap between them, like sesame seeds in a pile. Day and night they will appear and support that person.

of celibacy is also rare. At the time when one engages in the practice of celibacy, one will see the Tathágata directly. Day and night, one
will see the Tathágata. At the time one sees the Tathágata directly and looks at the Tathágata day and night, one sees the buddha field.
When one sees the buddha field, one sees all the treasures. When it is one’s time to die, terror will not be born. One will not be born in
a mother’s womb at all. One will not become sorrowful at all. One will not be bound by the noose of craving.”

He said this, and the Blessed One spoke thus to the bodhisattva, the great being Sarva-shúra, “Sarva-shúra, the arising of tathágatas
is rare.”

He said: “Blessed One, it is rare. Sugata, it is difficult to find.”

The Lord: So it is, Kausika. The merit of any devotee of perfection of wisdom is entirely different; such is immeasurable, incalculable, inconceivable, incomparable, illimitable. From perfection of wisdom all-knowledge of Tathagatas comes forth; from all-knowledge has come forth the cult of the relics of Tathagata. Here the difference in merit of any devotee of the perfection of wisdom bears no proportion at all to the accumulation of merit born from building Stupas, made of the seven precious things, enshrining the relics of Tathagatas.

Herein forty thousand gods in the assembly are saying to Sakra, the Chief of Gods: Sir! Do take up perfection of wisdom! The perfection of wisdom, Sir, take this up, recite such, study such and explain such for unlimited benefit of any and all beings!

The Lord: Kausika, do take up perfection of wisdom, recite, study and explain it! If the Asuras form any idea of fighting with the Gods of the Thirty-three, and if you, Kausika, have studied, and then recite and explain perfection of wisdom by bringing this to mind, the Asuras will drop such ideas.

The Lord: So it is, Kausika. The merit of any devotee of perfection of wisdom is entirely different; such is immeasurable, incalculable, inconceivable, incomparable, illimitable. From perfection of wisdom all-knowledge of Tathagatas comes forth; from all-knowledge has come forth the cult of the relics of Tathagata. Here the difference in merit of any devotee of the perfection of wisdom bears no proportion at all to the accumulation of merit born from building Stupas, made of the seven precious things, enshrining the relics of Tathagatas.

Herein forty thousand gods in the assembly are saying to Sakra, the Chief of Gods: Sir! Do take up perfection of wisdom! The perfection of wisdom, Sir, take this up, recite such, study such and explain such for unlimited benefit of any and all beings!

The Lord: Kausika, do take up perfection of wisdom, recite, study and explain it! If the Asuras form any idea of fighting with the Gods of the Thirty-three, and if you, Kausika, have studied, and then recite and explain perfection of wisdom by bringing this to mind, the Asuras will drop such ideas.

"Ananda, the first resolution is this: if you wish to renounce the position of Sound-Hearer and cultivate the Bodhisattva Vehicle, and to enter the knowledge and vision of the Buddha, you must carefully consider whether the resolve on the cause ground and the enlightenment on the ground of fruition are the same or different. 4:145

”Ananda, it is impossible while on the cause-ground to use the mind subject to production and extinction as the basis for cultivating in quest of the Buddha vehicle, which is neither produced nor extinguished. 4:146

For this reason, you should realize that all existing dharmas in the material world will decay and disappear. Ananda, contemplate the world: what thing is there that will not waste away? 4:146

”But, has anyone ever heard of the disintegration of the void? Why not? It is because the void does not exist, and so it can never be destroyed. 4:147

”While you are in your body, what is solid is of earth, what is moist is of water, what is warm is of fire, and what moves is of wind. Because of these four bonds, your tranquil and perfect, wonderfully enlightened bright mind divides into seeing, hearing, sensation, and cognition. From beginning to end there are the five layers of turbidity. 4:147

If there are bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, or upāsikās who memorize and recite this dhāraṇī 800,000 times, their deadly karma in every place, created over innumerable eons, will be completely annihilated.

In every place where they are born or reside, they will always meet buddhas and bodhisattvas. They will always have adequate resources and abilities to do as they wish.

In any birth, they will always be able to leave the home life, and will have the ability to maintain the pure precepts of a bodhisattva. They will be born in human or heavenly realms, they will not fall into evil destinies, and they will always be protected by all the heavenly guardians.

If there are virtuous house-holding men or women who recite and maintain it, their households will not encounter harm caused by disasters or suffering caused by unexpected illness. Everything spoken to others will be truthful and accepted by them.

NAMAḤ SAPTĀNĀṂ SAMYAKSAṂBUDDHA KOṬĪNĀṂ TADYATHĀ OṂ CALE CULE CUNDE SVĀHĀ

-- Saptakoṭibuddhamātṛ Cundī Dhāraṇī Sūtra

If you were to become angry or upset when others speak in dispraise of us, would you be able to recognize whether their statements are rightly or wrongly spoken?"

"Certainly not, Lord."

"If, bhikkhus, others speak in dispraise of me, or in dispraise of the Dhamma, or in dispraise of the Sangha, you should unravel what is false and point it out as false, saying: 'For such and such a reason this is false, this is untrue, there is no such thing in us, this is not found among us.'

"And if, bhikkhus, others speak in praise of me, or in praise of the Dhamma, or in praise of the Sangha, you should not give waView jubilation, joy, and exultation in your heart. For if you were to become jubilant, joyful, and exultant in such a situation, you would only be creating an obstacle for yourselves.

If others speak in praise of me, or in praise of the Dhamma, or in praise of the Sangha, you should acknowledge what is fact as fact, saying: 'For such and such a reason this is a fact, this is true, there is such a thing in us, this is found among us.'

If bhikkhus, others speak in dispraise of me, or in dispraise of the Dhamma, or in dispraise of the Sangha, you should not give way to resentment, displeasure, or animosity against them in your heart. For if you were to become angry or upset in such a situation, you would only be creating an obstacle for yourselves. If you were to become angry or upset when others speak in dispraise of us, would you be able to recognize whether their statements are rightly or wrongly spoken?"

The first is those who slander the great vehicle; the second, those who commit the five cardinal sins; and the third, icchantikas, or persons of incorrigible disbelief. These three categories of illness are the gravest in the world.”

King Ajātashatru suffered from severe boils because he committed the five cardinal sins and slandered the correct teaching. But his boils disappeared instantly when the light produced by the Buddha’s moon-loving meditation illuminated his body. And, though it had been predicted that the king had only twenty-one days left to live, his life span was extended by forty years. In deep appreciation, he earnestly requested one thousand arhats to record the golden words of the Buddha’s entire lifetime, thus spreading the Buddha’s teachings into the ages of the Former, Middle, and Latter Days of the Law.
